E-Iure´s XVI. and 2010 summer convention was held by Sousa Machado, Ferreira Da Costa & Associados, the Alliance long time Portuguese member, which provided the necessary conference facilities at the very convenient Porto Sheraton Hotel & Spa. It was the second time the Alliance met in its most south-western European member-state, after E-Iure´s memorable 5th convention which took place in Lisbon back in 2005.

Attendants gathered there on Thursday afternoon for a very warm Welcome Reception generously offered by their hosts, which gave a first, quick insight into the art of fine port wine and chance to get acquainted with the newcomers.

On Friday morning the convention was formally inaugurated by Mr. Manuel Ferreira da Costa for Sousa Machado, Ferreira Da Costa & Associados and Mr. José Luis Cobo as the Chairman of the Alliance. After a short introduction of the last and current changes and developments within each of the assisting law firms, aimed at deepening the mutual knowledge and ties between the members to enhance future cooperation and joint business generation, the Accounts and Financial Statements as well as the latest developments of the Alliance during the forgone semester were presented to the audience.
Furthermore further initiatives and activities as well as future prospects such as for instance the amendment of the bylaws of the association, the M&A Database and the common approach of potential clients were discussed. Subsequently, following the screenplay of the last conventions, again a vivid debate and exchange of opinions about how the member firms are managing to get along and adapt their businesses to the in most of the countries still ongoing Economical Crisis unfolded. This time however, one aspect happily and uncommonly was how to possibly benefit from the supposedly at least in some countries rather sooner than later upcoming upturn. The times, they are hopefully finally turning! Eventually Mr. Geir Kruge, who joined a convention for the first time representing the Norwegian law firm Steenstrup & Stordrange, Oslo, as a possible prospective member, gave a comprehensive introduction to audience about the history and focus of his renowned firm.

After a very pleasant lunch at the restaurant a Mesa with its gentle sun terrace over the roofs of Porto, Mr. José Almeida Guerra as key note speaker and Mr. Luis Roquete lectured about the current developments of the Real Estate sector in Portugal. The dissertation gave a fairly comprehensive and extremely interesting as well as gainful insight into the state of affairs in Portugal regarding this topic, which might be of great value and use for foreign investors and of course their attorneys. The lovely food and intensive lecture did not prevent attendees from taking up their business mood again back at the Sheraton, when Mr. Andrew Stott gave the audience a final lecture about his latest project named “Globiles”. Mr. Stott is an Englishman and Cambridge graduate who lives in Spain, his adopted country. He has had a career spanning 3 continents, having worked in more than 30 countries around the world. He furthermore has been working in the financial service sector for over 30 years as a banker and as a consultant, having been a partner at Price Waterhouse and subsequently Oliver Wyman Financial Services.

During his time at Oliver Wyman, he was part of the global leadership team and led the acquisition and integration of teams and consulting firms, as well as playing an active role in coaching and training of partners and consultants. Andrew Stott retired from Oliver Wyman in 2009 and founded Hermes Partners with seat in Madrid, where he is currently Managing Director. He furthermore started the aforementioned new project under the denomination “Globiles”, which he portrayed to the attendees. “Globiles” is a community of international professionals brought together on the basis of a new professional networking site, globiles.com. Innovative in it’s functionality, simple in its form and aiming to revolutionize personal and business development, “Globiles” is believed to make an impact into the world of online networking.

The idea behind is to make professional experts share their expertise and experience online in the frame of a community of people in a similar situation, making them contribute and getting them access to a library of posted articles, discussions groups, career coaches etc. All this is set to unfold within the bounds of a point system, which ultimately converts into shareholder value.

The more you contribute, the more you get. Attendants agreed that this idea and cutting-edge project could well be of interest as well for legal professionals and will therefore closely watch how it will be brought into practice within the near future. After finishing the working part of the conference, participants gathered at the famous Don Tonho restaurant across the Dom Luis I bridge on the opposite site of the old town right on the shores of the picturesque Rio Douro for a splendid dinner. The food small wonder was delicious, but the big point without any doubt was the more than scenic view of the sun setting behind the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Porto right from the waterfront. A truly memorable happening and dignified frame for the Alliance´ get together. Spirits accordingly were high and talks cheer– and fruitful as were the Vinho Verde from the Douro region and the Port Wine.

However, on Saturday morning not a single participant was missing when Alexandre Sousa Machado took the whole group for one of his famed and memorable historical-cultural sightseeing tours throughout Porto´s more than 2000 years old history as he already had done years ago in Lisbon. Few treasures were spared in between the Romans, Henry the Navigator and modern Porto. Impressions enough to be processed at the outstanding Restaurante Oceano enjoying delightful portuguese fish specialities at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. There of course could have been no better way to bring the convention to an harmonious end than by visiting one of Porto´s most famous Wine Cellars, getting a first hand insight at the art of growing and producing port wine. The next Convention will be held in Quito, Ecuador, from 06.01.2011 to 08.01.2011, and be hosted by our corresponding member firm Gallegos, Valarezo & Neira. Please feel free to register as soon as possible in order to give our hosts the chance to proceed with the necessary planning without delay. We hope to see as many as possible of you down there once again in “the Americas”!
